As a stylist, I’m always looking for pieces that will elevate an outfit and make my clients feel confident. However, there are a few items I would never recommend buying, and sometimes knowing what not to get is just as important! Hope I’m not going to hurt anyones feelings here, but lets get into it!
1. Extra Chunky Sole Sneakers
These shoes just have too much going on. The oversized sole distracts from the outfit, making the whole look seem out of proportion. I get that some guys want the added height, but there are sleeker ways to achieve that without looking bulky or awkward. Chunky sneakers just aren’t it.

2. Leather Jackets That Look Like Costumes
You know the ones—lots of zippers, studs, and loud embellishments. These jackets come off as costume-y and often look cheap. Instead, opt for a clean, streamlined leather jacket. A simple zip-up or button-down leather piece looks far more sophisticated and versatile.

Something like this is much more versatile, simplistic and effortlessly cool
3. Form-Fitting Zip-Up Jackets
If I’m going to dress a client in something form-fitting, I prefer it to be a polo, sweater polo, or a well-tailored sweater. Tight jackets, on the other hand, just don’t look good. They also lack comfort and don’t allow for layering. A more relaxed fit is usually the way to go. Who wants to wear a tight zip up anyways?!

4. Formal Jogger Pants
These are a no from me. Joggers are great for workouts or lounging, but trying to dress them up just doesn’t work. A straight-leg trouser will always look more polished and put together than a formal jogger.

5. Attached Flannels and Hoodies
The layered look is stylish when done right, but pre-attached flannels and hoodies completely miss the mark. The appeal of layering is that it’s intentional and personalized, but these two-in-one pieces take away from that creativity. Even if the piece costs over $2,000 (like the Celine flannel pictured below) I still wouldn’t recommend it.

6. Clip-On Ties
Every adult male should know how to tie a tie. Clip-on ties just don’t belong in a grown man’s wardrobe. Learning to tie a proper tie is a basic skill that everyone can master, and it makes such a difference in your overall look.

Those are the items I would never tell a client to buy, and trust me, you are going to want to take my advice! Let me know your thoughts, and as always, follow for more fashion tips and insights!
