How to Wear Patterns Without Looking Like a Complete Disaster

Kings, wearing patterns without looking like a mess is something a lot of people struggle with. Patterns can be tricky—they can clash if not styled properly, but when done right, they elevate your entire look. So let’s break it down!

1. Stick to One Statement Pattern Per Outfit

When you wear too many bold patterns at once, it becomes overwhelming. A simple way to avoid this is by choosing just one statement piece and keeping the rest of your outfit neutral. Here are some foolproof examples:

A striped shirt paired with neutral pants
A patterned blazer with jeans
An embroidered shirt with simple trousers
A floral shirt with solid-colored pants

2. Mixing Patterns? Keep the Colors Coordinated

If you want to wear multiple patterns in one outfit, color coordination is key.

Example of a well-coordinated look: These pinstripe Wax London Pants paired with a navy COS jacquard overshirt. Since they share a color family, they work well together.

But be careful! Just because two patterns share a color doesn’t mean they’ll always work. You also need to consider the scale of the patterns.
Golden rule: One pattern should be larger, while the other should be smaller.
Example of what NOT to do: These tweed pants from Standard Issue are super fun, however, the large-scale pattern on the trousers won’t work with the COS jacquard shirt because both are bold, statement patterns that compete rather than complement.

3. Ground Your Patterns with a Solid Piece

To keep your outfit balanced, make sure you’re grounding your patterns with at least one solid-colored piece. One approach is to pick a color from the pattern and match it with a grounding color in your pants.

Example: If you’re wearing a brown patterned shirt, opt for brown pants to tie everything together.

Another easy trick is to pair your patterned piece with a neutral, like beige or black, which helps give the eye a break.

4. Don’t Underestimate Patterned Accessories

If you’re not ready to commit to a full patterned outfit, accessories are your best friend. They can be subtle yet highly effective. Some great ways to incorporate patterns through accessories include:

A floral scarf
A striped tie
A fun pair of patterned socks
